From 1,537 Books to 68 Published Books: The Selection Funnel
How do you select 68 books from 1,537 books? Here is our editorial process, step by step.
The Raw Material
Atharva Inamdar's book archive contains 1,537 books written between 2007 (age 10) and 2026 (age 29). Nineteen years of continuous writing output.
Not all of these are publishable. Some are diary entries from childhood. Some are incomplete drafts. Some are experiments that didn't work. Some are early attempts that show growth but not mastery.
The Selection Process
Step 1: Completeness Filter
First question: Is this a complete book? Partial drafts, abandoned projects, and fragments were set aside. This reduced the pool significantly — many early books were started but never finished.
Step 2: Coherence Check
Second question: Does this book tell a complete, coherent story (fiction) or present a complete argument (non-fiction)? Books with major plot holes, missing endings, or structural problems were set aside for potential future revision.
Step 3: Quality Assessment
Third question: Is the prose at a publishable standard? This is subjective but we applied consistent criteria:
- Sentence-level clarity
- Dialogue that sounds like real speech
- Pacing that maintains engagement
- Character consistency
- Factual accuracy (for non-fiction)
Step 4: Genre Balance
We deliberately selected across genres to represent the full range of the archive. It would have been easy to publish 30 thrillers — but that would misrepresent an author who writes across 37 genres.
Step 5: Revision
Selected books went through revision:
- Structural editing (chapter order, pacing, scene placement)
- Line editing (prose polish, clarity, consistency)
- Proofreading (grammar, spelling, formatting)
- AI-assisted quality check (Grammarly and modern AI tools for consistency)
Step 6: Metadata and Classification
Each published book received:
- Genre and sub-genre classification
- Quality tier assignment (Hero, Support, Archive)
- Theme tagging
- Content warning assessment
- ISBN assignment
- Blurb and tagline
The Result
68 published books from 1,537 books. A 4.4% selection rate.
The other 1,469 manuscripts aren't gone. They're in the archive, waiting. As revision technology improves and editorial capacity grows, more books will be elevated to published status.
The catalog grows. The archive waits.
